Two stretches of expressways to close for roadworks

PART of the junction of Bayan Lepas Express-way and Kampung Jawa Expressway in Penang will be closed to traffic from 6am on Saturday to 6am on Jan 22. State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Datuk Koay Kar Huah said this meant motorists coming from George Town would not able to turn right into the Kampung Jawa Expressway in front of the Penang Seagate (M) Sdn Bhd factory.

“They can either use Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah to turn into Kampung Jawa or make a long detour at Phase Four of the Free Industrial Zone,” he told a press conference at the Public Works Department office in Komtar yesterday. He said the closure was to make way for the RM1.6mil road upgrading project involving both expressways. He said project would solve the flash flood problem at the seafront of Bayan Lepas Expressway near Seagate. State JKR road chief assistant director Mejar Mohd Tajul Urus Tajuddin said work on the six-phased project started in November and was expected to complete by the end of next month. “The project involves a part of Bayan Lepas Expressway, which covers 650m, and a 250m stretch of the Kampung Jawa Express-way. “These low lying areas will be raised to 0.9m. This will also rectify the unevenness of the roads,” he said.
